Storefront Door Locks in Sunnyvale

Shop doors here are one design repeated with very few exceptions: glass held in a narrow aluminum frame with the lock buried inside a vertical stile barely two inches across. Nothing that fits it is sold in a hardware aisle, which is why so many of these doors limp along half-broken for months. Deadlatches, hookbolt deadlocks, mortise cylinders in the right cam and tailpiece combinations, paddle handles, inside thumbturns and overhead closers ride on the van instead. The brick fronts on Murphy Avenue had aluminum entrances dropped into them decades ago, and the strips along El Camino Real and the ground floors on Mathilda Avenue tell the same story. Bakery, barber, taqueria, nail salon, the bike shop near the station: whatever the trade, the requirement is a door that locks the way the lease says it must.

Before a screwdriver comes out, the door is shut slowly and the latch is watched as it arrives. Very often the lock is healthy and the leaf has dropped. These frames pivot top and bottom, the lower pivot takes the wear, and a few years of that leaves the latch landing three or four millimeters low and missing its pocket entirely. Anyone leaning on the door then finds it swinging open despite having been locked at close. A new pivot and a repositioned strike settle that for a fraction of what a lock costs, and where that is the fault, that is what gets quoted. Where the latch itself has worn short, a replacement goes in. On a pair of doors meeting in the middle, or on any door somebody has already levered, a hookbolt earns its keep, since it rotates behind the keeper instead of sliding into it and cannot be sprung out by force. The cylinder is repinned or exchanged for one with the correct cam, and a thumbturn on the inside face means whoever locks up does it from the shop floor rather than out on the sidewalk after dark.

Storefront work is $165 to $469 per door with hardware included and the $89 service call inside it. Around $165 covers exchanging a worn deadlatch or fitting a new mortise cylinder. The top of the range covers a hookbolt on a restricted cylinder together with a paddle handle and a closer reset on a heavy leaf. Where a stile cylinder needs repinning because somebody left the payroll, that runs $28 to $45 per cylinder, quoted as one figure across however many doors are involved. Evening work on that first door is $215 and a start before 7am is $250, both named while you book, which is why so many shops here take the hour before opening.

You call and say which opening it is and what it is doing, with a photograph of the door edge and one of the lock face. The figure is said on the call, with the overnight hour already inside it. The van leaves Moffett Park and a text names the technician and a thirty-minute window; travel runs fourteen to thirty-one minutes across the city. The door is checked for drop, repaired or refitted, keyed, then swung through the closer a dozen times over. The receipt carries the figure you were given and names the make and model of every part, for the day the landlord asks what went into their door.
