The gate closed behind you at 1am.

In this city half the doors are not doors: street gates on loop detectors, lobby readers, garage clickers, parcel room panels. Any one of them can be the thing between you and your own bed. Sunnyvale runs on shifts, so two in the morning is an ordinary hour here, and that hour is already inside the figure you are given.

Calls answered 24/7. The $89 visit is inside the figure. Your own unit door and your own fob are yours to arrange; a gate, a lobby or a parcel room needs the manager or the HOA.

a glass or steel leaf held by a maglock or an electric strike, released by the reader outside and a request-to-exit sensor inside

  3. 03

    Garage and elevator

a roll-up or grille on the same clicker, then a cab reader that lights only the floors your fob is enrolled for

  4. 04

    Unit door

a cylinder in a standard bore, sometimes a keypad deadbolt the building allowed, often a latch that no longer meets its strike

  5. 05

On every job

Whichever Door Stops You

Four things that hold the same way for a fourth-floor unit off Fair Oaks Avenue, a 1958 ranch house in Cherry Chase, a 240-unit lobby at Moffett Park and a shop door on Murphy Avenue.

  1. 01One figure on the call, whether the job is a cylinder, a reader or a gate boardSay which opening has stopped and what it is doing. A single figure comes back that already contains the $89 visit, the labor and every part that ends up on the opening. Access work is priced the same way as a deadbolt here, $149 to $429, rather than sent off for a quote: a fob reader, a maglock, a request-to-exit sensor, a keypad, a call box, a clicker or a gate operator all sit in that band, and you hear the number before you agree to anything.
  2. 02The receipt carries that same figure, whatever the technician finds behind the panelA gate operator wired by three different contractors since 2009. A maglock still holding because the release button was never landed on the right circuit. A unit door whose latch has not met its strike since the building settled. A fob batch that was enrolled on a panel nobody has the code for. None of it changes what you pay. The card is charged the figure from the call, and the emailed receipt shows that figure broken into lines.
  3. 03The opening is made without damage first, and a drill only once you say soPicks, decoders, bypass tools and, on the electric side, the manual release and the board itself come out before anything destructive does, so the lock or the reader is still working when the van pulls away. If a mechanism genuinely will not give, you hear what it is doing and what would go in its place, and the call is yours. Agreeing to a drill never earns anyone a higher figure.
  4. 04Card or tap at the opening, and paper for whoever has to file itA reader or a phone tap once the door behaves, not a minute earlier. An itemized receipt arrives in your inbox under a business name. When a landlord, a building manager, an HOA board or an insurer needs the job described in a line they can put in a file, that line comes with it.

House lockout
My fob got me through the street gate and the lobby and then I stood at my own door with the keys on the kitchen counter. $139, said on the call, and that is what my card was charged. I gave the building and the unit number, the van was there in about seventeen minutes, and he matched my ID to a lease page in my email before he touched the cylinder. Deadbolt open with nothing taken off the door. Nobody made me chase the property manager first, which is what I was dreading on a Thursday afternoon.

Lock rekey
Our house dates to 1957 and after twenty-eight years of neighbors, contractors and a dog walker we had no idea how many keys were out there. Five cylinders: front, back, the slider bar, the garage side door and the gate onto the driveway. $164 for the lot as one figure. He repinned everything instead of selling me new hardware, which is what I wanted to hear, and gave the old keys back in a bag so I could count them against the drawer. One key does the whole property now.

Access control
I manage a building on Java Drive and our lobby reader had been intermittent for a month, so residents were propping the leaf open with a fire extinguisher. $312 for the reader and the maglock circuit. He found the release button wired to the wrong side of the timer, which is why the maglock held after hours no matter what the panel said. Because it is a shared opening he wanted the authorization from me before he started, which I appreciated, and he re-enrolled the fobs for two units that had turned over. Receipt itemized clearly enough to hand to ownership.

Car lockout
Groceries in the trunk, keys visible in the door pocket, car locked, in the lot off El Camino Real. $132 on the call and twenty-two minutes to the van pulling in. He worked the top corner of the frame and there is not a scuff on the paint or the weather seal, which I checked twice in the daylight because the car is two months old. Tapped my card in the lot and the receipt was in my email before the ice cream gave up.

Lock replacement
Original 1956 knob set and a deadbolt somebody added later, neither lining up with the frame anymore. $214, and the figure did not move. He set the new strike into the stud behind the jamb and showed me the short screws that had been holding the old one into trim, which explained a lot about how that door has felt for years. Four stars because the arrival landed at the far end of the window he texted me, closer to twenty-five minutes than the number I first heard. Work itself I have no complaint about.

House lockout
Home from a red-eye at ten past one in the morning and my fob would not read at the gate. A neighbor coming out let me in, and then my unit door turned out to be the real problem because my keys were in the bag that stayed in Denver. $214, with the overnight hour already inside it rather than appearing at the end. Nineteen minutes. He opened the deadbolt without marking the door, told me the fob itself was fine and the gate reader was the thing failing, and said plainly that the gate was the manager's call to make and not mine. I sent that to the office the next morning.

Why us

The street tells us the lock. That is what makes the figure honest.

The access side is priced, not quoted

Most locksmiths treat gates, readers, maglocks and fob panels as a site visit followed by a proposal. Here it is $149 to $429, said on the call like anything else, because in a city where more people come home through a gate and a lobby than through a front door on a street, an opening you cannot get a price for is an opening you cannot plan around. Master key systems are the one exception, and those get walked and counted first because a building nobody has looked at cannot be priced honestly.

One van, based in Moffett Park, and every minute measured from it

No shop, no counter, no dispatch out of another county. Moffett Park sits at the north end of the city, which is why the towers on Java Drive and the Heritage District both run fifteen minutes, while Birdland is twenty-three, Los Altos and Cupertino twenty-seven and Los Altos Hills thirty-one. Twenty-one minutes is the honest citywide average. Where an area is slower it is named as slower while you are still on the phone.

The overnight hour is ordinary here, not an event

Swing crews finish at midnight, red-eyes land at one, movers give up at two, and the parcel room reader fails on a Sunday. Calls are answered 24/7 and the $50 evening hour and $85 overnight hour are folded into the figure before you agree to it, so a late job sits higher inside its published range and never above the ceiling. Nothing is added at the door because of the clock.

Stocked for both halves of the city

Cylinders, pins and fifties-era knob and deadbolt stock for the ranch streets in Cherry Chase, Ponderosa and Birdland, and slider hardware for the patio doors on the back of those same houses. Fob readers, keypads, call box parts, maglocks, request-to-exit sensors, gate operator boards and blank fobs for the blocks along Fair Oaks Avenue, Wolfe Road and Java Drive. Hookbolts, deadlatches and closers for the glass fronts on El Camino Real and around Murphy Avenue. Exit devices for kitchens and man-doors, safe tooling, and blanks and programmers for most of what parks at the Caltrain lot and in the office garages.

How it works

From the street name to the receipt

  1. 1

You call and say which opening it is and what it is doing

A unit door, a house, a street gate, a lobby, a parcel room, a shop front, a car or a safe. Which street or which building, the unit number when there is one, and whatever sits between the curb and the thing that stopped: a call box, a garage grille, an elevator, a side gate, steps up from the road.

  2. 2

The figure is said on the call, with the hour already inside it

One number covers the visit, the labor and the parts, whether the part is a cylinder, a strike, a reader or a gate board, with the $89 visit inside it and the evening or overnight hour counted when the clock calls for it. If the opening is shared, this is also where authority gets settled, so a manager or an HOA is not being chased halfway through the job. You answer yes or no with the number in front of you.

  3. 3

The van leaves Moffett Park and a text names who is coming

The message carries the technician's name and a thirty-minute window drawn from where the van actually is. At the door, ID is matched to the address, a lease page or a management agreement to the building, or the registration to the plate, before a case is opened.

  4. 4

The receipt carries the figure you were given

The opening is made without damage wherever the mechanism allows and goes back to doing its job. Card or tap on the spot, an itemized receipt in your inbox, and a written line for a landlord, a building manager, an HOA board or an insurer when one is needed.

Before you call anyone

Five questions worth asking before you give anyone your building and unit number

Search for a locksmith in Sunnyvale and much of what comes back is a call center in another state that sells your address to whoever is nearest, advertises a two-figure price, then collects three hundred once the door is open, usually after drilling a lock that would have picked in four minutes. On buildings the same operation will happily unbolt a lobby reader nobody authorized it to touch. The questions below take about a minute between them, and anyone working straight answers all five without stalling.

Read the guides
  1. 1Ask for one figure with the $89 visit already inside it and the hour already counted. "Starting at" and "the tech will price it there" are not prices, they are room kept open for later.
  2. 2Ask what they charge for a gate operator or a lobby reader. Anyone who says access control is quote-only has told you they will name the number when you are standing in a hallway with nowhere else to go.
  3. 3Ask who they need authorization from for a shared opening. The correct answer is the manager, the owner or the HOA. Anyone willing to work on a gate because a resident asked will do the same at your building for someone else.
  4. 4Ask which tools come out ahead of a drill, and what hardware goes on if drilling wins anyway. Anyone leading with a drill has not thought about your opening yet.
  5. 5Refuse cash only. A landlord, a property manager, an HOA board or an insurer needs an itemized receipt with a business name on it, and a figure written on a slip satisfies none of them.

FAQ

Asked on the way to the phone

How long until the van reaches me?+

Twenty-one minutes is the average across Sunnyvale, measured from the van in Moffett Park. By area: the Heritage District and Murphy Avenue 15 minutes, Moffett Park and Java Drive 15, Fair Oaks and Wolfe 17, Lakewood and the Baylands edge 19, Sunnyvale West and El Camino 19, Cherry Chase 21, Ponderosa and Ortega 21, Birdland 23. Outside the city line: Mountain View 21, Alviso and the north bay edge 25, Los Altos 27, Cupertino 27, Los Altos Hills 31. Los Altos Hills and the far side of Cupertino are honestly the slowest and you hear that on the call rather than standing in a driveway wondering. The window that arrives by text is drawn from where the van actually is, not from the average.

Do you actually work gates, lobby readers and fobs, or only keys?+

Both, and the access side is the bigger half of the week here. Gate operators and loop detectors, call boxes, keypads, lobby fob readers, maglocks, electric strikes, request-to-exit sensors, elevator floor restriction, garage clickers, and enrolling or removing fobs as people move in and out. It is priced like any other job at $149 to $429 with the $89 visit inside that, rather than sent away for a quote. The van carries reader stock, gate boards, strikes and blank fobs alongside cylinders and pins, because on these streets the thing that stopped you is as likely to be electric as mechanical.

Why is there a range at all?+

Three things move a job inside its range. First, which opening it is, because a rekeyed cylinder, a lobby reader and a gate operator are different amounts of work. Second, who has the authority to order the work, since a shared opening needs a manager or an HOA and that sometimes changes what can be done in one visit. Third, which hour you are calling in. Once those three are settled the figure is a single number, not a span, and it stays that number on the receipt.

I rent off Fair Oaks Avenue. Do I need my landlord before you open my unit door?+

No. Your unit door is yours and so is your own fob: a lockout, a rekey your lease allows, a fob that has stopped reading, all of that you can arrange yourself. Bring photo ID showing the address, or ID plus something on your phone that ties you to the unit, such as a lease page, a rent receipt, a utility bill or addressed mail. Give the building and the unit number on the call, because a call box with ninety buttons is no help to a van circling Wolfe Road. Nobody is contacted about you, and no owner has to approve putting you back into the place you pay for.

Who can order work on the gate, the lobby or the parcel room?+

The manager, the owner or the HOA, never a single resident. A shared opening belongs to the whole building, so the person authorizing it has to be the person responsible for it. In practice that means a property manager, an on-site manager, an owner, or a board member acting with the HOA behind them, and a management agreement or a text from the owner is enough to settle it. If you are a resident and the gate has failed at one in the morning, say so on the call anyway: getting you to your own unit door is a different job from repairing the gate, and the first one can go ahead while the second waits for the office to open.

Do nights, weekends and holidays cost more?+

Saturday, Sunday and holidays cost what a Wednesday afternoon costs. Only the clock changes anything: $50 between 8pm and midnight, $85 between midnight and 7am. Both are folded in before you hear a figure, so nothing appears later. A house lockout that is $125 in daylight comes back as $175 at eleven at night and $210 at four in the morning, all of it still inside the published range of $125 to $219. Given how many people here work swings and red-eyes, the late call is treated as the normal call it is.

Will the lock still work after you open it?+

Almost always, and it never gets drilled without your agreement. Picks, decoders and bypass tools cover unit door cylinders, fifties builder deadbolts across Cherry Chase and Ponderosa, aluminum storefronts, patio sliders, most car doors and most safes. On the electric side, a stuck maglock or gate usually comes down to the release circuit, the sensor or the board rather than anything that has to be cut. The exceptions are a high-security cylinder, one already smashed, or one welded around a snapped blade. When that is your opening you hear it plainly, you hear what would replace it, and you decide. The figure does not move either way.

Our Cherry Chase house still has its original hardware. Does all of it have to come off?+

Usually not. Streets through Cherry Chase, Ponderosa and Birdland are full of fifties knob sets and later deadbolts that still turn well and only need repinning so keys from three owners ago stop working. Three things genuinely earn replacing: a cylinder with real wear in it, a bolt whose throw no longer reaches the frame, and a strike screwed into trim instead of the stud behind it, which is the single detail that decides how a door behaves under a shoulder. Which of the three applies to yours is said before anything is unscrewed.

A tenant moved out and still has a working fob. Can you take it off the system?+

Yes, and it is worth doing the day the keys come back rather than the month the audit happens. A fob is a credential in a panel, not a key, so removing it takes the panel and the authority to use it, which means a manager, an owner or the HOA. What comes back is a list of what is live and what was removed, unit by unit, so the record is not just in someone's memory. The same visit can enroll the incoming resident, add or drop an elevator floor, and set the parcel room and amenity rooms to match. That work sits in the $149 to $429 band with the visit inside it.

Do you cover the Caltrain lot, the mall structures and the office garages?+

All three, plus the flat streets around Ortega Park, Las Palmas Park and Washington Park, the carports behind older courts on El Camino Real, and the yards and lots along Java Drive and Mathilda Avenue. Name the lot and give a level, a row or the color of the car. A gated structure needs somebody who can get the van through, so say on the call whether that is you, the building or an attendant, because that is the one thing that turns a twenty-minute job into an hour of waiting. It does not change the figure.

24/7 — nights, weekends & holidays

Say which opening stopped you, hear the figure, and get through it

Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Alviso, 24/7, holidays included. A gate, a lobby reader, a fob, a unit door, a shop front, a car or a safe: one figure comes back with the $89 visit and the hour already inside it. Your own door and your own fob are yours to arrange; a shared opening takes a word from the manager or the HOA, and that gets sorted while you are still on the phone.
